1793 S-1 R4 Chain AMERI. PCGS graded AU-53. Glossy steel and olive brown. The surfaces are smooth, void of any trace of corrosion, verdigris, or planchet defects. The only notable marks are a few very light rim bruises. These are located above the B in LIBERTY, well right of that Y, and at the O in OF. None of these marks is at all distracting and this piece offers excellent eye appeal. Nicely struck and well centered on the planchet. The date and legends are all bold. MDS, Breen state III. There is a faint bulge at the 1 in the date and clear die clashmarks from the chain show under the truncation. A very nice example of our first Federal Large Cent. Called EF40 Average Plus by Noyes and tied for CC#9 in his census, photo #62002. Our grade is EF40 as well. The attribution and Paul Gerrie provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 1793 S-2 R4+ Chain AMERICA. PCGS graded MS-62 Brown. Beautiful frosty chocolate and light olive brown with hints of light bluish steel overtones on the reverse. Satiny luster shows in the protected areas on both sides, especially around the chain. No hint of roughness, verdigris, or planchet defects. This cent offers great eye appeal. There is a touch of rub on the highpoints and only a few trivial contact marks. The notable marks are a thin vertical nick in the hair above the ear and a barely visible tick on the forehead. E-MDS. The fields are smooth and there is no bulge through the base of the date. Clear die clashmarks show under the truncation. This is a choice Chain Cent. Graded AU50 Average Plus by Noyes and CC#5 in his census, photo #34544. Also called AU50 in the Bland census. Our grade is AU55. 1793 S-8 R3 Wreath Cent. PCGS graded AU-58. Glossy steel and olive brown with traces of frosty luster peeking through in protected areas, especially on the reverse. The only marks are a few tiny pre-striking planchet chips in the field before the face, as struck. MDS, Breen state II, with a fine diagonal die crack through the wreath from the first T in STATES to the second A in AMERICA, strongest inside the wreath. Well struck with all the border beads intact on both sides. A very nice Wreath Cent. Graded EF40 Average Plus and CC#13 in the Noyes census, his photo #62003. Our grade is EF40. 1793 S-9 R2 Wreath Cent. PCGS graded AU-55. CAC Approved. Choice glossy steel brown and light chocolate with darker steel toning on the highpoints. Nicely struck and nearly flawless. The planchet is perfectly smooth and there are only a few minor contact marks. The notable ones are a light rim bruise left of the fraction and a pinprick just right of the second A in AMERICA. M-LDS, Breen state VII. The crack through CA in AMERICA is strong and it extends weakly through the ribbon ends and fraction to UNIT. 1793 S-11a R4+ Wreath Cent with Vine & Bars Edge. PCGS graded VF-35. CAC Approved. Choice glossy chocolate and steel brown. Smooth and very attractive, virtually flawless. The eye appeal is outstanding. The surfaces are smooth and display only a few minor marks. These include a very light rim bruise under the bust tip that does not affect the border beads and a small nick under the second S in STATES. The obverse is nicely centered on the planchet while the reverse is off a bit to K-5. LDS, Breen state IV. The die clashmarks on the obverse have been polished off the die. A very attractive, problem-free mid-grade example of the Vine & Bars version of this variety. Our grade is VF20 Choice. The attribution and Paul Gerrie provenance are shown on the PCGS label. 1793 S-11c R3- Wreath Cent with Lettered Edge and Single Leaf. PCGS graded AU-50. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate mixed with small streaks of lighter brown toning on the obverse. Smooth, free of any trace of corrosion or planchet defects. Just a few small contact marks, including a rim nick over the R in LIBERTY, another right of the fraction, and a couple nicks at ENT. LDS, Breen state IV. The strong die clashmarks have been polished off the obverse die and the profile of Ms Liberty is less well defined than it was in the early die state. Nicely centered on the planchet. An attractive, well-balanced example of the Lettered Edge with Single Leaf following DOLLAR version of the Wreath Cent. Our grade is VF25. 1793 S-13 R4- Liberty Cap. PCGS graded AU-53. Mostly glossy dark olive brown and steel with slightly lighter steel brown toning on the highpoints. Peeps of frosty luster show in some of the protected areas on the reverse. The planchet is smooth except for some tiny pre-striking planchet chips in the center of the reverse. Only a few minor contact marks. These include a very light rim bruise at the top of the cap, another over BE in LIBERTY, a thin vertical nick on the ear, and a diagonal one high on the forehead. None of these marks is at all distracting and the eye appeal is excellent. EDS, Breen state I, prior to the minor bulge at NT in CENT. Nicely struck showing all the border beads on both sides on a broad planchet. The obverse is slightly off center to K-7 while the reverse is off a bit to K-10. Graded EF45 net EF40 and tied for CC#6 honors in the Noyes census, his photo #56000. Our grade is EF45. A great 1793 Liberty Cap Cent. 1794 S-18a R6+ Head of 1793 with Edge of 1793. PCGS graded EF-45. Lightly cleaned long ago, now nicely retoned a glossy medium steel brown and chocolate. The planchet is smooth and very attractive, completely free of roughness or flaws. Just a few minor marks, including a small rim bruise at RT and a fine hairline scratch across the upper reverse from the rim at D-S to the first A in AMERICA, plus a few other trivial signs of light contact on both sides. E-MDS, Breen state II. Die lapping has weakened the right leaf below T in CENT. Second finest behind the ANS example, which has a severe planchet flaw. Called VF30 net VF20 and CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #20426. Bland says VF25 and CC#2. The next best is only net F12 in both census lists. Our grade is VF25. This is the discovery coin for the variety and is the plate coin used in the Noyes book on the early large cents. Comes with a very nice provenance, as you would expect with such an important cent. 1794 S-18b R4 Head of 1793 with Edge of 1794. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. Lustrous light steel brown with frosty golden tan faded down from original mint color in protected areas. There is a small spot of reddish olive toning on the ear and smaller spots of olive toning at the chin, in the field before the forehead, and at the left top of M in AMERICA. Would rate a slightly higher grade except for a fine hairline scratch across the top of the reverse from the leaves over O in ONE to the dentils over the left side of M. The fields are hard and lustrous, and the eye appeal is outstanding. MDS, Breen state III. The right leaf below T in CENT is fragmented due to die lapping, and faint die clashmarks are visible behind the portrait. Graded net MS60 by Noyes and Bland, Noyes photo #20333. Noyes has this example tied for CC#2; Bland says CC#3. Our grade is MS60 as well. One of only 3 mint state examples of the 1794 with Head of 1793 cent type, regardless of die variety (all are Sheldon-18b), and one of those is in the ANS museum. A beautiful and very important cent. 1794 S-19b R4 Head of 1793 with Edge of 1794. PCGS graded AU-50. CAC Approved. Glossy reddish tan and light olive with darker steel toning on some of the highpoints and around MERI. There are some light contact marks, including several small rim bruises on both sides, the strongest of these being a dull rim nick well left of the date. The planchet is mostly smooth but there are a few small planchet voids or dull pinpricks in the hair below the cap with smaller planchet chips at the dentils near TY and RICA (as struck). Still a very nice example of the 1794 Head of 1793 type, and the high grade assigned by PCGS attests to this assessment. M-LDS, Breen die state II, with an obvious bulge in the field under the cap. Called EF45 net VF25 and tied for CC#9 in the Noyes census, his photo #20159. Bland says VF35 net VF25 and tied for CC#8. We believe the net grade on this cent is VF25+, very close to VF30, but perhaps this cataloger is biased since the coin was once in his collection. 1794 S-21 R3 PCGS "Genuine, Unc Details, Environmental Damage". Frosty reddish steel with steel brown toning on the highpoints. Sharply struck with virtually mark-free surfaces. No verdigris or corrosion. A barely visible rim bruise off the end of the pole and another small one at the F in OF are the only notable marks. A tiny diagonal nick just right of the denominator can help identify this cent. Apparently the unusual reddish steel toning resulted in the "Genuine, Environmental Damage" assessment, which is certainly understandable. E-MDS, Breen state III, showing a fine die crack arcing from the left side of the B in LIBERTY to the cap where is fades away. Called AU55 net EF45 and tied for CC#5 in the Noyes census, photo #28335. Bland says AU55 and tied for CC#3 in his Bland/Breen census. There is a rim bruise under the lowest curl, a faint vertical hairline scratch in the right obverse field, a dull nick left of O in OF, and an obvious stain of reddish olive toning mixed with shallow crud at ERI. Otherwise the planchet and surfaces are reasonably nice. LDS, Breen state V. The obverse die cracks are strong. Tied for CC#7 in both census lists. 1794 S-24 R1. PCGS graded AU-58. The "Apple Cheek" variety, so-called because Ms Liberty's cheeks appear to be especially full and rounded on this die. Attractive glossy medium chocolate brown and steel with a few microscopic specks of darker toning left of the bottom of the cap. Just a few trivial marks, including a couple tiny rim nicks right of the fraction and a small planchet flake on the upper right corner of the E in STATES. LDS, Breen state VI. The obverse is bisected by a fine die crack from right of the date to the rim over the L in LIBERTY, and the lower half of the neck and field over the date are covered with fine die rust. Graded AU50 and tied for CC#8 in the Noyes census, his photo #61011. Our grade is EF45. Another really beautiful 1794 cent in this outstanding collection that emphasized quality. 1794 S-25 R3. PCGS graded AU-53. Frosty light olive brown with attractive bluish steel overtones in protected areas. Reported to have been lightly cleaned long ago, but the toning appears quite natural and very attractive today. No spots or contact marks, and only a very light touch of rub on the highest points from mint state. Flawless except for an uneven strike resulting from axially misaligned dies. The softly struck areas are at the dentils from K-1 to K-3 on the obverse and the opposing area at ICA clockwise to UN, but the legends in these areas are still clearly visible. These softly struck areas also show some of the small pre-striking planchet imperfections that usually disappear when the planchet is properly squeezed between the dies. The remaining areas are well struck and the overall eye appeal of this cent is excellent. E-MDS, Breen state II, with single die clashmarks on both sides and no die cracks. There is a thin but clear double profile from the top of the forehead down to the tip of the nose with additional doubling on the lips, bust, and date (caused by die bounce). Lustrous bluish steel brown and light chocolate with hints of very faded mint color peeking through in protected areas on both sides, especially at D-STA on the reverse. No friction and only a few trivial marks. These include a shallow diagonal planchet depression in the center of the neck and a small spot of dark steel toning high on Ms Liberty's temple. The reverse is choice in every respect. Sharply struck MDS, Breen state IV, with a die crack down through the E in STATES to the leaf below, clear die clashmarks on the reverse, and a small die chip at the top of the I in AMERICA. Graded MS60 and CC#3 in the Bland census. Noyes also has it as MS60 but CC#4 in his list, photo #22506. Our grade is MS60+. This is a great cent that offers outstanding eye appeal, a fact that has been recognized by experts for well over a century. Both sides are plated in the 1879 Frossard Monograph and in the Breen Encyclopedia, and the reverse is illustrated in the Chapman reference. 1794 S-28 R2 PCGS graded Mint State-63+ Brown. Lustrous medium chocolate and chestnut brown with satiny mint frost covering the fields on both sides. Looks mint state with outstanding eye appeal (hence the outstanding grade assigned by PCGS), but there is a hint of very light friction on the highest points of the hair. The only marks are a thin vertical nick at the left end of the eyebrow, a tiny tick on the jawline near the ear, a pair of very tiny rim nicks just left of the fraction, and a speck of dark toning on the upper seriph of the C in CENT. Nicely struck early die state but not quite the earliest, Breen state I late or II early. A faint radial die crack extends from the dentils opposite the neck into the field halfway to the neck, but the thin die line from the dentils right of STATES is clear. Called MS60 and tied for CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says AU55 Choice and CC#4 in his census of confirmed examples, photo #34001. Either way this is a beautiful early cent. 1794 S-29 R2 PCGS graded Mint State-65+ Brown. Choice lustrous medium brown and light chocolate with traces of faded mint red showing around the legend outside the wreath. Both sides are covered with attractive mint frost giving this cent outstanding eye appeal. The surfaces are nearly flawless. The best identifying marks are a tiny nick between the bases of the 1 & 7 in the date, a small spot of slightly darker toning low on the cap, and another spot midway between the second S in STATES and the O in OF. M-LDS, Breen state III, showing a fine die crack from the dentils through the R in AMERICA, myriad fine die cracks in the obverse fields, plus clear die clashmarks inside the wreath at ON and CE. Another beautiful 1794 cent in this outstanding collection. The obverse is plated to illustrate the die in Penny Whimsy, and the reverse is plated in the Frossard-Hays reference on the series. Both sides are illustrated in the Breen Encyclopedia and in the 1923 Chapman reference on the cents of 1794. The only notable mark is a fine, light vertical scratch from the jawline right of the ear lobe down to the top of the neck where it fades away. M-LDS, Breen state III. 1794 S-31 R1. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. Very choice lustrous steel and medium chocolate brown. Satiny mint frost covers all but the highest points of this cent, and the eye appeal is outstanding in every respect. A tiny, barely visible speck of darker toning at the tip of the nose is the best identifying mark. MDS, Breen state II. The die chips in the field under the cap are obvious. Graded AU58 Average Plus by Noyes, tied for CC#7, his photo #62005, but it looks at least as nice as several in his census that he calls Mint State. Our grade is AU58+, very close to mint state, and it was graded MS62 in the Eliasberg sale back in 1996. A choice, premium cent in every respect. 1794 S-32 R2+ PCGS graded Mint State-64+ Brown. Lustrous light olive brown and chocolate. A sharp, very attractive cent, but unevenly struck, as usual with this variety. The die faces were not parallel (Breen calls this axial misalignment), pressing the planchet more strongly on the left side then on the right. The result is a very strong strike on the left with weakness along the right edge of both sides. Perhaps that's why the reverse die cracked so early in the marriage. The weakly struck areas display many of the tiny planchet imperfections that normally strike out. This condition is evident on all the high grade examples listed in the Noyes census. Otherwise this piece is free of contact marks or other notable defects. M-LDS, Breen state IV. The cud break at LI in LIBERTY is clear and the crack from the rim through the first S in STATES extends heavily through the wreath toward the O in ONE. Called MS63 Choice and tied for CC#1 with one other piece in the Noyes census, his photo #22633. Bland says MS60 and CC#2 behind a slightly finer example in his list. Our grade is MS60. 1794 S-33 R6 "Wheelspoke" Reverse. PCGS graded VF-35. Glossy chocolate brown with lighter chocolate toning covering the devices. The surfaces are smooth and display only a few trivial marks, including a pair of tiny nicks under BE in LIBERTY and two small pinpricks or shallow pits low on the neck at the shoulder. The reverse is choice, flawless except for a small nick under the E in AMERICA. Late die state, Breen state V, with all 6 of the "Wheelspoke" cracks on the reverse present, and each of them is clearly defined. The central reverse bulge is present as well, but the grade is high enough that ONE CENT remains visible and nearly complete. Called VF25 (Average Plus) and finest known in both the Noyes and Bland census lists, Noyes photo #21888. Our grade is VF25. The second finest known piece is impounded in the ANS, and these are followed by two examples grading Fine-12. This is the cent plated in Penny Whimsy to illustrate the Wheelspoke Reverse, and both sides are plated in the Noyes book and the Breen Encyclopedia (the plate coin in Breen is incorrectly identified as the Sears-ANS example). A beautiful example of this rare and very popular 1794 variety, certainly a highlight to any advanced collection of Large Cents. 1794 S-36 R5. PCGS graded AU-55. Sharpness near EF45 but there is a minor rim mark over the T in LIBERTY and a couple smaller tics over ER in AMERICA. Choice glossy medium steel brown and chocolate with smooth, hard surfaces. This cent offers excellent eye appeal. Late die state, Breen state III, showing fine die clashmarks on both sides. All the delicate die cracks mentioned by Breen are present. Third finest known of the variety in the Noyes and Bland census lists where called EF45 net VF35, Noyes photo #39044. Our grade is VF35+, close to EF40. The finest is impounded in the ANS Museum leaving only one finer specimen in collector's hands, a marginally superior net EF40 example. Naftzger, Jr., on 1/26/2001 in exchange for the museum’s original Clapp AU55 coin-Bowers & Merena 3/21/2002:1114-Chris McCawley as bidder for Tony Terranova, Chris McCawley, and Martin Paul (Martin Paul later sold his 1/3 interest to a dealer who wishes to remain anonymous; Terranova and McCawley subsequently bought the 1/3 interest from the anonymous dealer)-McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 9/5/2004:173-Paul Gerrie. (Note: The transfer of this cent from the ANS Museum to R. E. Naftzger, Jr., on 1/26/01 deserves additional comment. The cent being offered here resided for many years in the ANS Museum collection before it was transferred to Mr. Naftzger in 2001 in exchange for the AU55 example then in Ted’s collection. Ted acquired the AU55 piece from Dr. William H. Sheldon on 4/19/1972 when he purchased Dr. Sheldon’s collection of early date cents. It was determined several decades later that the coin sold to Ted was obtained improperly by Dr. Sheldon from the ANS, and following lengthy legal wrangling a swap was arranged transferring the piece being offered here from the ANS to Ted in exchange for the higher grade Clapp coin, which was transferred from Ted back to the ANS. This agreement brought a welcomed end to an important yet upsetting chapter in the history of Large Cent collecting.

1794 S-38 R5+ PCGS "Genuine, XF Details, Cleaning". Sharpness EF40 but cleaned and retoned frosty dark steel and reddish chocolate brown with lighter steel brown and tan toning in protected areas. There are some light contact marks on both sides including a vertical nick on the left top of the N in CENT, a couple diagonal nicks left of the O in OF, and a dull rim nick over the first A in AMERICA. The surfaces are decent but not perfectly smooth. A strong glass reveals uniform microscopic granularity covering both sides. No verdigris. Breen die state I. The inner chip in the field under the cap is strong but the one closer to the dentils is faint. Breen thought that the two chips got stronger as the die worn down, but this cataloger believes the chip got weaker as time went by. So, Breen says this piece is from the early state of the dies while I believe it is from the late state. Regardless, this is a sharp condition census example of a tough variety. Bland says net VF25 and tied for CC#4 in his census. Noyes says EF40 net VF25 and CC#4 by itself, his photo #28743. Our grade is net VF25 as well. And it comes with an extensive provenance that includes several distinguished numismatists. The attribution and Paul Gerrie provenance are noted on the PCGS label.

Struck very slightly off center to K-3. Graded AU55 Choice and CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #22591. Bland says AU55 and CC#2 as well. There is a spot of slightly darker toning at the end of the pole and another area of similar toning at BE in LIBERTY. A thin nearly horizontal nick above the N in ONE is a good identifying mark, but it is trivial. MDS, Breen state III. The die cracks through the U in UNITED and 17 in the date are clear, but the crack through U does not reach the C in CENT. A fine die crack extends from the rim through the bust and across the neck but fades out as it reaches the hair. A sharp, very attractive cent. The reverse is glossy reddish brown with light olive and steel brown highpoints and a swipe of darker olive brown toning at F-AM. The surfaces are smooth, free of corrosion or verdigris. There is a small dig high on the neck, a long horizontal nick at the bottom of the cap, and a light rim bruise at AT in STATES. LDS, Breen state II, with a strong die crack from the rim down through the cap into the hair at the back of the head. Second finest known in both census lists. Bland says net VF20 while Noyes says VF25 net F15, his photo #27616. Our grade is F15+. The obverse is plated in Frossard-Hays, Elder-Gilbert, Early American Cents, Penny Whimsy, and the Morley grading guide for the cents of 1794. Both sides are plated in the 1923 Chapman reference on the cents of 1794. H-6 (Hays-6) is neatly penned onto the edge in yellowish-white ink in two different places. The only contact marks are a microscopic tick under the earlobe and a small nick on the leaf over the O in ONE. M-LDS, Breen state IV, with two shallow linear depressions in the field before the face (Breen called them "trenches"), each with a fine die crack running along the depression. Graded MS65 Choice by Noyes and tied with one other piece for finest known, his photo #29573. 1794 S-64 R5- Missing Fraction Bar. PCGS graded AU-58. Choice glossy chocolate brown delicately mixed with slightly darker olive brown and steel tones. Great surfaces and outstanding eye appeal. The only marks are a couple thin, light nicks in the field off the chin, a nick on the rim right of the throat, and a nick across the leaves under the T in CENT. Nicely struck EDS, Breen state I, prior to the die crack through the D in UNITED. The "Missing Fraction Bar" feature is obvious. A great example of this popular "Redbook" variety that offers outstanding eye appeal. Called AU55 Average Plus and tied for CC#2 honors in the Noyes census, photo # 20605. 1794 S-66 R5+. PCGS graded VF-35. Attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate with darker chocolate brown toning in protected areas. The surfaces are perfectly smooth everywhere except in the field around LIBERTY, where traces of extremely fine roughness are partially hidden under the attractive glossy toning. The only marks are a couple small, shallow planchet flakes at the L in LIBERTY, a pair of faint hairline scratches across the top of the cap, and a barely visible rim nick just left of the fraction. Otherwise this cent is choice, and the eye appeal remains excellent. Terminal die state, Breen state IV, with the "Split Pole" crack bold plus an additional die crack arcing from the forehead into the field where it fades out as it nears the dentils opposite the chin. Called VF25 and finest known in the Del Bland/Walter Breen condition census. Noyes says VF35 net VF25 and tied for CC#1 honors with one other piece, his photo #21046. Our grade is VF25. Plated in Chapman, Early American Cents (obverse only), Penny Whimsy (obverse only), Breen’s Complete Encyclopedia, and in the Noyes book. 1794 S-67 R3 PCGS "Genuine, Unc Details, Scratch". A frosty nearly mint state cent that has an obvious planchet lamination flake on the truncation over the 9, and someone added a fine vertical scratch up from the top of the flake. The cent was lightly cleaned long ago and is now toned an attractive frosty light to medium chocolate brown. The color is attractive and the eye appeal of this cent would be outstanding if not for the delamination and short scratch. MDS, Breen state III, showing clear die clashmarks on both sides. 1794 S-72 R2 Exact Head of 1795 PCGS "Genuine, AU Details, Cleaning". Frosty steel and light olive. The color is attractive and appears natural in spite of the PCGS assessment. But there is a chance it was lightly cleaned long ago and has retoned naturally over the decades. The only marks are a thin diagonal nick close above the eye and a faint planchet lamination line that meanders through the cap down to the dentils left of the middle curls (as struck). E-MDS, Breen state II, with a fine die crack from the left top of the Y down to the right foot of the adjacent T and on to the browlock and hair. The reverse is uncracked. A nice example of the "Exact Head of 1794" variety. Graded EF40 and tied for CC#5 in the Noyes census, photo #39035. Bland says EF40 and tied for CC#6 in the Bland/Breen census. 1795 S-76a/b R7 Thick Planchet with Plain Edge. PCGS graded VF-35. CAC Approved. Choice glossy medium brown. Great eye appeal with nearly flawless surfaces. A tiny pitmark or planchet chip in the field under the left edge of the first S in STATES is the only mark visible without a strong glass. LDS, Breen state IV early. Swelling in the obverse fields is just starting to appear, but it is faint. Weight 198.0 grains, which is much heavier than the 168 grain standard for the thin planchet, plain edge version (Sheldon-76b). Breen mentions that a few examples are known on these thick, heavy planchets with a plain edge. Breen classifies these as mint errors, which makes sense. However you wish to classify this cent, it is a beautiful example of an extremely rare "error/sub-variety." Removed from an ANACS slab graded VF30 (ANACS label included, and it includes the attribution as "S-76a No Edge Lett"). Our grade is VF25. The attribution is shown on the PCGS label with "Plain Edge on 12.76 Gram Planchet," and the Paul Gerrie provenance is listed as well.
